Central Novosibirsk contains a handful of good museums, for those wishing to learn more about Russian history and art works from Siberia. The Krasny Prospekt is a good place to start in Novosibirsk and is home to both the Local Studies Museum and also the State Art Museum, one of the city's leading public art galleries and is currently contains around 9,000 different works of art.

These come in various shapes and forms, and every year the State Art Museum hosts the Novosibirsk International Biennial, which is nothing short of a celebration of contemporary graphic art works.

The Local Studies Museum enjoys a central location in Novosibirsk and is known locally as the Kraevedchesky Muzey. Inside you will find a collection include some rather magnificent religious treasures, along with a number of Altai shaman coats and also some interesting cutaways of pioneer houses. In total, the museum is home to almost 200,000 different artefacts over various ages, and clearly illustrates the history of Siberia spanning thousands of years.

Those with even only the slightest interest in Russian art works should consider a visit to the State Art Museum, which is home to an impressive collection of Siberian works of art. In particular, look out for the landscape paintings of Russian mountains by Nikolai Rerikh, and the various Braque-esque pieces created by Nikolai Gritsyuk. The State Art Museum was established as far back as 1958, when it was known form many years as the Novosibirsk Regional Picture Gallery. As well as the countless paintings by Russian artists from the 16th century onwards, the gallery is also home to an increasing collection of foreign paintings and sculptures, which originate from all over Europe.
