There are a number of excellent family orientated tourist attractions in the city, with the Novosibirsk Zoo setting a high standard and being hard to beat. 

At the centre of the city, the prominent statue of Lenin and his famous flapping coat presides over Lenin Square (Ploshchad Lenina), standing close to a number of modern sculptures and directly opposite the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Other striking tourist attractions in Novosibirsk come in the form of churches and include the Chapel of St. Nicholas and the Alexandre Nevsky Cathedral on the Krasny Prospekt, and the Cathedral of Ascension on the Ulitsa Sovetskaya.  The harsh Siberian winters see the Ob River freeze and the creation of an ice town, while the summer attractions include plenty of sunbathing opportunities along stretches of the riverbank and on some popular sandy beaches.

The city's leading tourist attraction for families, Novosibirsk Zoo enjoys a natural woodland setting and is an exceptional zoo, being highly regarded throughout the world.  Home to more than 11,000 exotic animals and creatures, covering almost 4,000 different animal species, the zoo is visited each year by around one million tourists and is approximately 131 acres / 53 hectares in size.  The zoo is especially famous for its big cats, which include rare white tigers, along with Siberian tigers, important relatives of the African Cape lion and a number of endangered species.  Recently, one of the Bengalese tigers at Novosibirsk Zoo was in the news, after giving birth to a tiger-lion cub, known as a 'liger'.

Novosibirsk Tourist Attractions: State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre - Krasny Prospekt, Novosibirsk, Russia, RU

The premier theatre not only in Novosibirsk, but in the whole of Siberia, the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre dates back to 1945, which it first opened its doors.  This is also the biggest theatre in the whole of the Russian Federation, making it an extremely important landmark and an iconic attraction often widely associated with the city of Novosibirsk.  The theatre itself features a huge self-supporting dome some 60 metres / 197 feet wide and around 35 metres / 115 feet high.  Capable of accommodating seated audiences of around 2,000 people, the interior of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre features some interesting reproductions of Greek statues, which adorn its upper gallery area.  Due to its sheer size and scale, the theatre has earned itself the nickname of the 'Siberian Coliseum'.

The Cathedral of Ascension presides over the Ulitsa Sovetskaya with its hard-to-miss golden domes and dates back to 1914.  However, you are in for quite a surprise when you step inside, since the interior is far larger that you would expect it to be from the outside.  Inside you will discover nothing short of a soaring space, filled with many colourful attractions and decorations, and flooded with natural light.

Novosibirsk Tourist Attractions: Alexandre Nevsky Cathedral (Sobor Alexandra Nevskogo) - Krasny Prospekt 1, Novosibirsk, Russia, RU
One of the most well-known landmarks in central Novosibirsk, the Alexandre Nevsky Cathedral was completed in 1898 and boasts an elaborate red-brick exterior, which Byzantine-style architecture.  This cathedral is amongst the city's most historic stone buildings and was thoroughly renovated towards the end of the 20th century, being reopened in the early 1990s, after being visited by the Patriarch Aleksey II, a leading of Russia's Orthodox Church.  The main attractions at the Alexandre Nevsky Cathedral are worth getting your camera out for and include gilded domes, detailed stonework, and some rather special murals.

Something for all of the family is the Novosibirsk Regional Puppet Theatre, where you will be able to view many beautiful handmade puppets and marionettes from the past. Housed in an especially attraction historical building, the theatre dates back to the late 1930s and features regular performances for all ages.
